We all are familiar with SOLID and other software design principles and have explored many design patterns. There is no better way to get a deeper understanding than to practice the concepts. Furthermore, some of the principles and patterns manifest themselves in what appear to be rather unconventional ways when applied under a set of constraints and requirements. In this intensive hands-on workshop, we will take some problems and device elegant lightweight design in code and discuss the tradeoffs. Experience the evolution of ideas into code and take shape through incremental development.

Spring is all about helping developers get to production quickly and safely. These days, "production" is all but guaranteed to mean Kubernetes, and Spring has you covered. Join me, Spring Developer Advocate Josh Long (@starbuxman), and we'll look at how Spring Boot makes writing blisteringly fast, cloud-native, and scalable services more effortless than ever.

Since 1994, the original Gang of Four Design Patterns book, "Design Patterns: Elements of Reusable Object-Oriented Software," has helped developers recognize common patterns in development. The book was originally written in C++, but there have been books that translate the original design patterns into their preferred language. One feature of "The Gang of Four Design Patterns" that has mainly stuck with me has been testability for the most part. Except for singleton, all patterns are unit testable. Design Patterns are also our common developer language. When a developer says, "Let's use the Decorator Pattern," we know what is meant. However, functional programming is new, so we will also discuss how these patterns change in our modern functional programming world. For example, functional currying in place of the builder pattern, using an enum for a singleton, and reconstructing the state pattern using sealed interfaces. We will cover so much more, and I think you will be excited about this topic and putting it into practice on your codebase.

Every day, there seems to be a new headline about a security breach in a major company’s web application. These breaches cause companies to lose their credibility, cost them large sums of money, and those accountable undoubtedly lose their jobs. Security requires you to be proactive. Keep your employer out of the headlines by learning critical security best practices. This hands-on workshop teaches you how to identify and fix vulnerabilities in Java web applications. Using an existing web application, you will learn ways to scan and test for common vulnerabilities such as hijacking, injection, cross-site scripting, cross-site forgery, and more. You will learn best practices around logging, error handling, intrusion detection, authentication, and authorization. You will also learn how to improve security in your applications using existing libraries, frameworks, and techniques to patch and prevent vulnerabilities.

Are you building or do you support an e-commerce website? If so, then these sessions are for you! Worldwide digital sales in 2020 eclipsed four trillion dollars (USD). Most consumers will leave a web page or a mobile app if it takes longer than a few seconds to load. Businesses that want to compete, need a high-performing e-commerce website. In these hands-on sessions, we will cover how to architect high-performing data models and services, helping you to build an e-commerce site with high throughput and low latency. You will learn how to support common use cases like product navigation, shopping carts, single sign-on, as well as checkout and order processing. These sessions will show you how to leverage the following tech to your advantage: - Java Spring Boot - OAuth - Distributed databases (Cassandra/AstraDB) - Cloud-Native Streaming (Pulsar)
